Lunar New Year
Since it was Lunar New Year and also the seventh anniversary of Format M, I had a reason to celebrate on February 1, 2022. I designed a New Year’s card for the occasion, and it was classic in red and gold with the tiger, the animal of 2022. The Lunar New Year is a big deal in the traditional Vietnamese and Chinese calendars. My ancestors are from there, so it’s a pretty important holiday for me. Everything is decorated in red and gold, and fireworks are set off to drive away the spirits of the old year.
Origin is all about the future
These New Year’s cards are a way for me to incorporate my Asian heritage into my creative work. For the next Lunar New Year, which was marked by the sign of the rabbit, a new New Year’s greeting was designed – inspired by sweets from my childhood.
The dragon represents my dad because he was born in the year of the dragon. Here’s a little something to honor him: The noodle-eating dragon is a symbol of good luck and good fortune, especially during the Lunar New Year. It’s a nod to him and the tradition of having noodles to represent longevity.
The year 2025 was marked by the sign of the snake, which promised a time of intuition, especially wisdom and change. Together with the sending of fortune cookies, this was a lovely way to greet the new year.
